Is AI in the Classroom a Threat or Tool?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is showing up in schools, homes, and everywhere in between. But many parents and teachers still wonder: Is AI helpful or harmful? In this episode of IMPACT: Parenting with Perspective, we talk about how AI can be a powerful tool—if we teach our teens how to use it the right way.
Some schools are banning AI. But is that the best choice? I believe we should stop banning it and start teaching it. AI isn’t going anywhere—and if we want our teens to succeed in the future, we need to show them how to use it safely, responsibly, and ethically.
What You’ll Learn in This Episode:
-
Why banning AI might actually hurt your teen
-
How AI is just like the calculator debate from the 90s
-
3 ways to teach your teen to use AI responsibly
-
How AI is already changing jobs and education
-
What parents can do to prepare their teen for an AI-filled world
Banning AI Is Like Banning Calculators
Do you remember being told you wouldn’t always have a calculator in your pocket? Well, now we carry full-blown computers in our pockets every day.
Just like calculators became a basic school tool, AI is the next tool our teens need to learn. Banning it only teaches them to fear it—or use it without understanding it.
Teach AI Use, Don’t Ban It
When we teach our teens how to use AI the right way, we give them a major advantage. That means helping them:
-
Ask good questions
-
Think for themselves
-
Use AI as a support tool, not a shortcut
Your teen shouldn’t use AI to do the work for them—but it’s great for brainstorming, outlining, researching, and improving their writing. Just like you might ask for help with editing or feedback, AI can be a second brain when used well.
AI and Teen Safety
One worry parents have is safety—and that’s fair. But the answer isn’t banning AI. It’s teaching our teens how to use it safely. That means:
-
Not sharing personal info
-
Knowing AI isn’t always 100% accurate
-
Learning to double-check facts
When you talk to your teen about AI safety, you’re helping them build digital wisdom that will last a lifetime.
AI Is Already Changing the Job Market
AI isn’t just for school. It’s already part of the workplace. Jobs in marketing, writing, design, healthcare, and even coaching are being shaped by AI.
Instead of fearing it, let’s prepare our teens to use AI at work—or even to build a career around it. Teens who understand AI will be ahead of the curve in job interviews, internships, and future careers.
Be the Guide, Not the Gatekeeper
The most important thing we can do as parents is guide our teens, not control them. That includes tech like AI.
So instead of saying, “Don’t use that,” try saying, “Let me show you how to use that the right way.”
Final Thoughts
AI is here to stay. If we want our teens to thrive in a tech-filled future, we need to model responsible AI use at home and talk openly about it.
Be curious. Ask questions. Share how you use AI (like I did in this episode). When we lead with trust and wisdom, our teens follow.
