Mirroring vs. Modeling

We tend to mirror people around us. If someone yells, we want to yell back. It’s normal.

But when you mirror your teen’s bad behavior, you teach them that it’s okay to act that way. You end up stuck in a loop of anger and blame.

Instead, you can choose to model the behavior you want to see.

That means staying calm, speaking kindly, and keeping control of yourself—even when your teen is upset.

The Controlling Parent Trap

Sometimes we yell or argue because we want to control our teen’s behavior.

We want them to stop yelling. We want them to act differently.

But here’s the truth:
You can’t control your teen’s words, feelings, or choices. You can only control your own.

If you try to control what’s outside your control, you fall into what I call the controlling parent trap.

Here’s how to get out:

  • Make a list of what you can control

  • Focus on those things

  • Let go of what you can’t control

The Lost and Confused Parent Trap

Another trap parents fall into is forgetting who they want to be.

In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to forget your values. You react. You yell. You say things you regret.

That’s the lost and confused parent trap.

To get out of this trap, ask yourself:

  • Who do I want to be as a parent?

  • What would that version of me do right now?

When you remember your parenting identity, it becomes easier to stay calm and lead with love.

Messing Up Isn’t the End

We all make mistakes. You’re going to have bad parenting moments. That’s okay.

What matters most is what you do after those moments.

Take responsibility. Apologize if needed. Show your teen how to make things right.

That’s powerful modeling. And it often has more impact than being perfect ever could.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to be a perfect parent. You just need to be a present parent.

Next time your teen blows up, don’t mirror their chaos. Instead, model calm.

Show them how to handle hard moments with respect and courage. You may be surprised at how they start to follow your lead.

You’ve got this. And I’m here to help.
