Parenting often feels like a never-ending list of problems. Some days, it seems like there are 117 things you need to fix. That weight can leave you tired, frustrated, and ready to give up.

From Overwhelmed to Focused
When I was a principal, the state gave me a list of over 100 problems to fix. It felt impossible. But instead of giving up, I looked for the biggest areas that needed change. I realized it came down to just two things: attendance and behavior.
When we focused on those two, graduation rates went up. Discipline problems went down. Students learned more, and teachers felt less stress.
This same idea works in parenting. You don’t need to fix every single problem. You just need to find the two that matter most.
Effort and Discipline
Recently, I saw this lesson again while coaching football. Our freshman team had a long list of mistakes. It was easy to feel discouraged. But when we watched the film, every mistake came down to two things: effort and discipline.
The players realized that if they gave full effort and stayed disciplined, everything else improved. The game became simpler, and their confidence grew.
The same is true in your home. Many of your teen’s struggles come back to effort and discipline. Are they trying? Are they following through?
Keep It Simple at Home
You may look at your teen and see dozens of problems. Maybe they don’t listen, stay up too late, or ignore chores. Instead of trying to fix it all, pick two things.
For example:
-
Work on showing more respect in conversations.
-
Stick to a consistent bedtime.
By narrowing the focus, you’ll see bigger results. Your teen will feel less overwhelmed, and you’ll feel less stressed.
Empower Your Teen
Another key is letting your teen help choose the focus. Ask them, “What two things could you work on that would make life better?”
They may say, “I don’t know.” That’s okay. Give them time to think. Even if they don’t admit it, you’ve planted a seed.
When teens feel like they chose the solutions, they are more likely to follow through.
Conclusion
Parenting doesn’t have to feel like 117 problems stacked against you. The secret is to simplify. Choose two things that matter most.
When you focus on those two, you’ll see more progress, less stress, and a stronger connection with your teen.
Keep it simple. Parenting gets easier when you do.
