The Problem With Good vs. Bad Parenting

We live in a world that loves labels. “Good parent” or “bad parent.” These words feel simple, but they can trap us.

When you believe in good parenting, you also believe in bad parenting. That forces you into comparison. You start asking, “Am I good enough?”

The truth is—no one else gets to decide your worth as a parent. Not your neighbor, your teen’s teacher, or people on social media.

The Hidden Traps

Here are a few hidden problems with chasing the “good parent” label:

  • Comparison Trap: You judge yourself against others. This steals joy and connection.

  • Focus on the Wrong Things: You base success on grades, sports, or behavior—all outside your control.

  • Division: Labels create “us vs. them.” That leads to judgment and distance, even from your teen.

A Better Way to Parent

Parenting isn’t about being “good” or “bad.” It’s about being intentional.

Ask yourself:

  • Who do I want to be as a parent?

  • What matters most to me?

  • How can I live those values every day?

For me, that looks like my 10-word vision statement: Parenting with love, confidence, and curiosity is easy and fun.

This keeps me focused on connection, not comparison.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to prove to anyone that you’re a good parent. Stop chasing approval. Start building connection and living your vision.

Connection beats comparison. Authenticity beats approval. That’s the truth your teen needs most.
