How to Help Your Teen Find Their Spark

Listen this whole episode on YouTube: Episode 282

Every teen has a spark inside them—something that makes them feel alive and excited about life.
But many teens lose touch with that spark as they try to fit in, please others, or live up to expectations.

In this episode of IMPACT! Parenting with Perspective, I talk with my friend Arthur C. Woods, author of SPARK for Emerging Leaders. We talk about how parents can help their teens discover who they want to be, not just what they want to do.

This episode is full of ideas to help your teen find their direction, grow their confidence, and take ownership of their life.

Finding Purpose Over Perfection

Teens often focus on grades, sports, or popularity. But these things don’t always give them a clear sense of who they are.
When your teen knows who they want to be, they’ll make better choices and feel more confident.

Arthur’s book, SPARK for Emerging Leaders, teaches teens how to focus on identity and purpose. It helps them look beyond goals and think about the kind of person they want to become.

You can start by asking your teen simple questions like:

  • Who do you want to be today?

  • What makes you feel most alive?

  • How do you want people to describe you?

These questions build awareness and help teens connect with what truly matters.

Turning Stubbornness Into Strength

Many parents worry their teen is too stubborn.
But that same stubbornness can be their greatest strength when guided in the right direction.

Arthur and I talk about how persistence—the ability to stick with something even when it’s hard—is one of the most powerful life skills a teen can develop.
When your teen is determined about something, help them see that as a gift. Then, teach them how to use that persistence in healthy, productive ways.

Why Mentors and Advocates Matter

Teens need adults who believe in them. Parents play the biggest role, but coaches, teachers, and mentors can also make a big impact.

Arthur calls these people “advocates.” Advocates see a teen’s potential and help them bring it out.
Encourage your teen to spend time with people who lift them up, challenge them, and believe in their best selves.

And remember—you don’t have to fix your teen. You just need to walk beside them, believe in them, and help them see what’s possible.

Becoming Resourceful and Open to Learning

Today’s teens have more tools and opportunities than ever before.
The real challenge isn’t having resources—it’s learning how to use them wisely.

Arthur and I talk about teaching teens to be resourceful—to use what they have, ask for help, and find creative ways to solve problems.

We also talk about the importance of staying coachable.
A teen who says, “I already know that,” shuts the door on growth.
A teen who says, “Teach me more,” opens it wide.

Final Thoughts

Helping your teen find their spark isn’t about pushing them harder. It’s about helping them see their own potential.

When they know who they want to be, they start to lead themselves.
They take ownership of their choices and begin building confidence that lasts.
