Why Your New Year’s Goals Fail Every Time

Watch this whole episode on YouTube: Episode 291

Every January, parents set big goals.
They want to be calmer, healthier, and more connected with their teens.

And every February, most of those goals are gone.

This is not because parents are lazy or unmotivated.
It’s because most goals start in the wrong place.

In this episode of IMPACT! Parenting with Perspective, Ben explains why goals fail—and what actually works instead.

Why Most Goals Don’t Work

Most people jump straight into action.

They say things like:

  • “I’ll try harder.”

  • “I’ll start a new routine.”

  • “This year will be different.”

But they skip one important step.

They never stop to ask who they want to be.

You can change actions for a short time.
But actions always drift back to match identity.

That is why motivation fades so fast.

Identity Always Wins

You can white-knuckle change for a while.
You can push, grind, and force yourself.

But identity always wins in the end.

If your identity stays the same, your results will too.

That’s why goals feel exciting in January.
And heavy and overwhelming by February.

The Simple Model That Works

Ben teaches a simple model:

Be → Do → Have

  • Be the person you want to become

  • Do the actions that match that person

  • Have the results as a side effect

Most people flip this order.
They focus on results first.

That approach rarely works.

Why Simple Is Powerful

Your brain likes things that feel complex.
It thinks complex means smart.

But simple is often more powerful.

When you know who you want to be, choices get easier.
Your actions start to line up on their own.

You stop fighting yourself.

A Parenting Example That Feels Real

Think about a common parenting struggle.
Maybe it’s arguing about chores.

Instead of asking, “How do I stop this fight?”
Ask a better question.

Who do I want to be in this moment?

Calm?
Curious?
Firm but loving?

That one pause can change everything.

Identity Is Like a GPS

Your identity works like a GPS.

If you don’t know where you want to go,
any direction feels fine.

But when you choose a destination,
the path becomes clear.

Most parents have never defined who they want to be.
That makes consistency almost impossible.

Habits Support Identity

Habits are not just actions.
They are part of who you are.

Your habits shape your identity.
Your identity shapes your habits.

This creates a powerful loop.

Over time, small habits create big change.

Focus on the Roots, Not the Fruit

If you want better results, don’t fix the outcome.

Fix the roots.

Like gardening, you don’t feed the fruit.
You feed the soil.

Being a better parent becomes a side effect.
So does better health, money, and peace.

Final thoughts!

This year, try something different.

Instead of making a long list of goals,
decide who you want to be.

Then practice being that person every day.

Small steps.
Simple habits.
Real change.

If you practice this for a year,
you won’t recognize yourself in the best way.
