Watch the full episode on YouTube – Episode 296
What do you do when your teen won’t listen, won’t change, or won’t accept help?
Maybe they refuse coaching.
Maybe they won’t go to therapy.
Maybe they won’t even talk.
That can feel exhausting.
It can also feel scary and lonely.
In this episode, we talk about what parents can do even when their teen won’t change. You still have power. You still have options. And it all starts with where you place your focus.

-
Why trying to control your teen makes things harder

How to focus on what you can control

Why changing yourself can change your home

How to reconnect with your teen where they are
When Your Teen Refuses Help
Many parents reach out because they want help for their teen.
Sometimes the teen shows up.
Sometimes they don’t.
If your teen won’t come to coaching or therapy, that’s okay. You can still start the work.
You don’t need your teen’s permission to grow.
You don’t need their buy-in to improve your home.
You can start with yourself.
Be the Change You Want to See
This idea sounds simple, but it is powerful.
If you want your teen to be calmer, start with calm.
If you want more respect, show respect first.
If you want better connection, work on connection.
In many families, the parent is the catalyst for change.
When you change how you show up, the whole home can shift.
Stop Trying to Control What You Can’t
Many parents feel overwhelmed because they try to control too much.
Here’s the truth:
Most things about your teen are outside your control.
You cannot control:
-
Your teen’s choices
-
Their attitude
-
Their effort
-
Their emotions
Trying to control these things leads to stress and burnout.
Focus on What You Can Control
Instead of fighting what you can’t control, focus on what you can.
You can always control:
-
How you think
-
How you feel
-
How you behave
When you focus here, you feel calmer.
You feel more confident.
You feel less stuck.
This shift alone can change how parenting feels.
Connect With Your Teen Where They Are
Many parents try to connect with the teen they wish they had.
That teen doesn’t exist.
Real connection happens when you meet your teen where they are right now.
When parents compare, criticize, or push, teens pull away.
When parents accept and listen, teens soften.
Connection comes before change.
Your Words Become Their Inner Voice
How you talk to your teen matters more than you think.
Teens often repeat their parents’ words inside their own heads.
If your words are harsh, their inner voice becomes harsh.
If your words are calm, their inner voice becomes calmer.
You are teaching your teen how to talk to themselves.
You Don’t Have to Let Them Walk All Over You
Letting go of control does not mean letting go of boundaries.
You can still:
-
Set limits
-
Hold consequences
-
Be firm
The key is how you show up while doing it.
You can be firm and loving at the same time.
Final Thoughts
If your teen won’t change, that doesn’t mean you’re stuck.
You still have power.
You still have choices.
You still matter.
When you stop trying to fix your teen and start focusing on yourself, things begin to shift.
You don’t need your teen to change first.
You can start here.
