Why Every Boundary Turns Into a Fight With Your Teen
You tell your teen to turn off the game at 9:00.
Seems simple enough.
Then 9:00 comes.
“Five more minutes.”
You say no.
He argues.
You explain why he needs sleep.
He tells you nobody else has to get off that early.
You remind him he has school tomorrow.
He gets mad.
And somehow a simple boundary has turned into a 45-minute event.
It’s easy to think:
Boundaries just don’t work with my teen.
But the boundary usually isn’t the real problem.
It’s everything happening around the boundary.
The reminders.
The negotiating.
The explaining.
The threats.
Trying to get your teen to understand why you’re right.
And sometimes, giving in because you’re tired and you just want everyone to stop fighting.
That’s when boundaries get exhausting.
A boundary shouldn’t require you to manage your teen’s thoughts, feelings, and choices.
You can’t control whether he likes the boundary.
You can’t control whether he thinks it’s fair.
You can’t even control whether he follows it.
And you definitely can’t force him to happily say:
“Sounds great, Mom. Thanks for the reasonable boundary.”
Your job is different.
You get to decide what you will allow.
You get to decide what you’ll agree to.
And you get to decide how you’ll show up when your teen pushes back.
That’s what I call parenting from the inside out.
Instead of trying to control everything happening outside of you, you get clear about what’s actually yours to control.
And here’s the part that surprises a lot of parents:
Your teen can disagree with your boundary and the boundary can still be working.
In fact, learning how to calmly disagree may be an important skill for both of you.
In this episode of the podcast, I break down why boundaries so often turn into battles and several things parents do with good intentions that actually make boundaries harder.
If you’re tired of reminding, arguing, explaining, and wondering why a simple rule turns into a huge fight, listen to the full episode.
