How to Give Your Teen a Voice Without Giving Up Your Authority
How to Give Your Teen a Voice Without Giving Up Your Authority
If you’ve ever tried giving your teen more of a say, you may have wondered if it was a terrible idea.
You give him an inch.
He tries to take a mile.
You make one exception, and suddenly he thinks that’s the new rule.
Or you ask what he thinks would be fair, and his answer makes you think, “Yep. This is exactly why I’m the parent.”
I get it.
But giving your teen a voice doesn’t mean putting him in charge.
Those are two very different things.
A lot of parents feel stuck between two choices:
Control everything.
Or give in.
But there’s a big space in the middle.
Your teen can disagree with you.
He can tell you what he wants.
He can even suggest a completely different solution.
And you can listen to all of it without handing him the final vote.
That’s the shift.
Instead of asking:
“How do I get my teen to do what I want?”
Try asking:
“How can we solve this problem together?”
You’re still the parent.
You still get to decide what you’re willing to allow, what you’re willing to do, and where your line is.
But your teen stops being the problem you’re trying to control.
Now he gets to help solve the problem.
I’ve seen this work with phones, chores, gaming, bedtime, and even situations where my own kids broke a rule I felt strongly about.
And sometimes the teenager’s solution might surprise you.
One of our foster teens once suggested a consequence for himself that was so harsh that my wife and I had to talk him into something easier.
That experience taught me something important about boundaries:
Getting buy-in and giving in are not the same thing.
And once you understand the difference, you don’t have to choose between controlling your teen and letting him walk all over you.
I share the full story—and another situation involving my own kids secretly using Snapchat—in this week’s podcast episode.
