How to Parent Like a Coach Instead of Trying to Control Your Teen

Have you ever felt like you care more about your teen’s choices than he does?

You care about the homework.

The video games.

The chores.

The room.

The attitude.

The future.

So you remind him. Then you remind him again. Then you lecture, warn, threaten, or take over.

And somehow, you still end up feeling like you’re failing.

Ben Pugh coaching a young football player on the field, with text that reads “Episode 319: Stop Trying to Control Your Teen. Start Leading Instead.”

In this episode, I’m sharing one of the biggest lessons football has taught me about parenting teens: you can’t run the play for your players.

You can teach. You can prepare. You can set expectations. You can hold boundaries. You can make adjustments.

But your teen still has to play his position.

A lot of parent-teen power struggles happen because parents are trying to carry responsibilities that belong to their teen. And the more you try to control your teen’s choices, the more exhausted and frustrated you become.

This doesn’t mean you back off and let your teen run the house.

It means you learn how to lead from your position.

In this episode, I’ll show you how to parent more like a coach. You’ll learn how to stop reacting from fear, create a clearer game plan, communicate expectations before consequences, and take responsibility for your leadership without taking over your teen’s life.

If you’ve been stuck in battles over homework, chores, screen time, respect, or responsibility, this episode will help you see your role in a new way.

Your teen doesn’t need you to control every play.

He needs you to lead.
