Watch the full episode on YouTube – Episode 307

Does your teen seem lazy?

They don’t do homework.
Their room is a mess.
You ask them to do something… and it never gets done.

So you start thinking:

“Why don’t they care?”

But here’s the truth:

Your teen is not lazy.
You’re just looking at it the wrong way.

And until you see it clearly… nothing will change.

Quick Question

Before you keep reading…

Ask yourself this:

-> What if your teen isn’t the problem?

-> What if the way you’re trying to motivate them is what’s not working?

Most parents don’t see this at first.

That’s exactly why they stay stuck.

Podcast episode 307 cover with Ben Pugh and Cortni discussing teen motivation and parenting teens, message reads “Lead, Don’t Force”

Your Teen Is Motivated (You’re Just Missing It)

Every human is driven by three things:

    • Pleasure
    • Pain
    • Energy

    Your teen is no different.

    They play games → pleasure
    They avoid homework → pain
They lay around → save energy

    That’s not laziness.

    That’s how humans work.

    The Mistake Most Parents Make

    You assume:

“If they cared… they would try.”

    But your teen does care.

Just not about what you care about.

    That’s where the breakdown happens.

    The Real Problem

    You value school, chores, responsibility
    They value fun, friends, freedom

    So what do you do?

    You push harder.

    And what do they do?

    They push back.

Now you’re stuck in a loop:

    • You push
    • They resist
    • You get frustrated
    • Nothing changes

    Sound familiar?

    Why This Keeps Getting Worse

Your teen lives in a world full of:

    • Comfort
    • Screens
    • Instant rewards

They don’t have to work hard to feel good.

So of course they choose the easy option.

    You would too.

    The Shift That Changes Everything

    Stop trying to force motivation

Start learning how to work with it

Step 1: Find What Actually Drives Them

    You can’t motivate your teen…

But you can connect to what already motivates them.

    Ask:

    • What do they care about?
    • What do they want more of?

    Then use that.

Step 2: Use Privileges (Not Power Struggles)

    Most parents argue.

    That doesn’t work.

    Instead, shift to this:

“If you want this… you need to do this.”

    Examples:

    • Want your phone? → Homework done
    • Want to drive? → Grades up
    • Want freedom? → Show responsibility

    Now it’s their choice.

    Not your fight.

    Step 3: Cut the Distractions

    Phones. Games. Social media.

    These kill focus.

    Set simple limits:

    • No phone at night
    • No games during the week
    • Work first, play later

This alone can fix a lot.

    Step 4: Stop Rescuing

    This one is hard.

    But it matters.

    If you always:

    • Remind
    • Fix
    • Step in

    Your teen never learns.

Sometimes the best move is this:

    Let them fail
    Let them feel it
    Let them figure it out

    That’s how growth happens.

    If Nothing Changes… Nothing Changes

    You can keep:

    • Nagging
    • Fighting
    • Hoping they’ll grow out of it

    Or…

You can change how you lead.

    Ready to Break the Cycle?

    If you’re stuck in:

    • Nagging
    • Power struggles
    • Feeling like nothing works

    It’s not random.

You’re likely stuck in a pattern.

And until you see that pattern…
    you’ll keep repeating it.

Take the Parent Trap Quiz to find out:

    • The exact trap you’re in
    • Why your current approach isn’t working
    • What to do differently starting now
