How to Help a Struggling Teen Who Doesn’t Want Help
How to Help a Struggling Teen Who Doesn’t Want Help
You can see it.
Your teen is struggling.
Maybe school is going badly.
Maybe he spends hours gaming.
Maybe he seems anxious, angry, lost, or completely unmotivated.
And you’re thinking:
“He needs help.”
The problem is, he doesn’t agree.
He doesn’t want therapy.
He doesn’t want coaching.
He may not even want to talk to you.
That can make you feel helpless.
Because when you can see a problem and your teen won’t let you help solve it, the natural response is to push harder.
But sometimes pushing harder is exactly what makes things worse.
One of the first questions I want parents to ask is this:
Is this dangerous, or is it just uncomfortable?
Those are not the same thing.
Sometimes teens really do need professional support.
But sometimes they’re failing.
Sometimes they’re frustrated.
Sometimes they’re dealing with consequences.
Sometimes life just feels hard.
And when we treat every hard season like an emergency, our fear starts driving the way we parent.
We lecture more.
We push harder.
We try to convince them that something is wrong.
And without meaning to, we can send a message like:
“I don’t think you can handle this.”
That’s usually not the message we want to send.
Your teen can have a problem without being the problem.
He can struggle without being broken.
And you can support him without taking over the struggle for him.
That doesn’t mean ignoring danger.
It doesn’t mean removing boundaries.
It means learning how to stay calm, look at what is actually happening, and decide what is really yours to do.
In this episode, I talk about what to do when your teen refuses help—and why the best place to start may not be with him at all.
