How to Stop Worrying About Your Teen’s Future
How to Stop Worrying About Your Teen’s Future
The Parenting Shift That Changed Everything With My Teen Son
Your teen misses one assignment.
And suddenly your mind jumps ahead.
What if he fails the class?
What if he doesn’t graduate?
What if he never learns how to work hard?
What if he’s still living in your basement at 35?
Nothing has happened yet.
But your body is already reacting like it has.
You feel tense.
You remind him again.
You lecture longer.
You try harder to control what happens next.
This is what worry does.
It makes you practice the future you fear.
I recently caught myself doing the same thing.
I had a hard conversation coming up, and for three days I thought about everything that could go wrong.
I lost sleep.
I felt sick.
I carried a pit in my stomach.
Then the conversation happened.
And it was fine.
All that worry did not protect me.
It did not predict the future.
It did not help the conversation go better.
It just made me suffer for three days before anything had even happened.
Parents do this all the time with their teens.
We think worry means we care.
We think it helps us prepare.
But often, worry changes how we show up.
We become more tense.
More controlling.
More reactive.
Less able to enjoy the teen standing right in front of us.
You can care deeply without expecting the worst.
You can take problems seriously without making yourself live through them twice.
And you can trust that when something hard happens, you will handle the next step.
That does not mean you ignore failing grades, bad choices, or disrespect.
It means you stop treating your worst fear like it has already happened.
In this episode, I share how to stop rehearsing disaster and start practicing a more hopeful, calm, and confident way of parenting.
