How to Parent a Strong-Willed Teen Without Power Struggles
How to Parent a Strong-Willed Teen Without Power Struggles
Strong-willed teens can be exhausting.
They question you.
They push back.
They want to know why.
And sometimes you probably wish your son would just say, “Okay, Mom,” and do what you asked.
I get it.
But there’s something I think we need to be careful about.
A lot of parents tell me they want their teenager to grow into an independent adult.
They want him to think for himself.
Stand up for what he believes.
Resist peer pressure.
Keep going when life gets hard.
Take responsibility for his choices.
Those are all great qualities.
But then we can spend the teenage years trying to teach him to stop questioning us and just do what he’s told.
See the problem?
Sometimes we confuse easy to parent with healthy and prepared for adulthood.
They’re not always the same thing.
That doesn’t mean your teen should get to do whatever he wants.
Strong-willed teens need boundaries.
Probably really good ones.
But your goal isn’t to break his strong will.
Your goal is to help him learn how to use it.
There’s a big difference between a teenager who stands up for himself and one who refuses to listen to anyone.
There’s a difference between asking good questions and arguing about everything.
There’s a difference between persistence and refusing to admit when you’re wrong.
That’s where you come in.
Your job isn’t necessarily to make him less strong-willed.
It’s to help him learn when that strength serves him—and when it doesn’t.
And this is also why trying to overpower a strong-willed teen can backfire.
Before long, you’re not even talking about homework, chores, video games, or bedtime anymore.
You’re fighting over who gets to win.
And the lesson you wanted to teach disappears.
In this week’s podcast, Stop Trying to Break Your Strong-Willed Teen, I’m sharing what coaching football taught me about these kids, why control often creates more resistance, and what you can do instead.
Because that thing driving you crazy about your son today?
It might someday be one of the things you’re most proud of.
